Lake Chelan Chamber Members;

There has been lots of discussion regarding the status of the World Endurance Sports Triathlons scheduled for July 8th through July 19th.  As of today, World Endurance Sports does not have authorization to use the City parks or School District property for the races.  The Chamber Board has decided not to partner with World Endurance Sports.  The potential impact of not having this series of races is large.  The Chamber investigated several options.  Based on a series of meetings, emails from participants, discussions with other Race Organizers, discussion with Chamber members, discussions with Chamber staff, and discussions local agencies (City, Sheriff, EMS, Fire District, etc.) the Chamber Board decided to;
  • NOT organize triathlons for July 2006.
  • Coordinate a community wide program to welcome Tri-athletes to Lake Chelan.
  • Coordinate a special 'Lake Chelan Fun' Coupon book for registered participants with special discounts.
  • Encourage Hotels/Motels to provide a discount for registered Triathlon participants
  • Coordinate 'informal' bike rides with stops at wineries (South shore to State Park), North shore (Boyd loop)
  • Work with local Bike Club to coordinate Mountain Bike rides at Echo Ridge
  • Provide Welcome Banner for Tri-athletes
  • Welcome poster for Chamber Member windows
  • Coordinate Fun Run for registered participants on July 8th and July 15th using the Chelan Chase Course
  • Notify participants of the Triathlon schedule for August at Daroga State Park.
  • Plan Lake Chelan Triathlons for June 2007 and late September / early October 2007 working with a local race organizer.
We need your support to make this a good Lake Chelan experience for the tri-athletes regardless of whether there are or are not formal races.  If you have questions please call me at the Chamber.

Chelan, Washington – The Lake Chelan Chamber of Commerce, Board of Directors has decided to coordinate a community wide program to welcome Tri-athletes to Lake Chelan regardless of the status of the triathlons.

On June 21st the Board said no to an agreement with World Endurance Sports to provide staffing and support for the My First, My Next and Half Ironman Triathlons scheduled between July 8 and July 19, 2006.  Since June 21st the Chamber Board and staff have been investigating options to provide a good experience for the people visiting the Lake Chelan area for the triathlons.  Dan Hodge, Executive Director, Lake Chelan Chamber of Commerce said “The Chamber Board is concerned about the reaction of participants when they find out the events organized by World Endurance Sports may not happen.   The Chamber will be coordinating a community wide program to welcome the Tri-athletes to the Lake Chelan community.”

The Chamber is organizing a special ‘Lake Chelan Fun Book’ for registered participants that will include special discounts for stores, restaurants and attractions.  There will also be information on informal self-directed bike rides that that go along the north shore and south shore of Lake Chelan.  The Chamber will be working with local bike groups to showcase the Echo Valley Mountain bike trails for the Tri-athletes.    The Chamber is planning a fun run for July 8th and July 15th if the World Endurance Sports triathlons do not occur on those dates.

The Chamber will be working to contact Triathlon participants to inform them of the status of the triathlon and what the community is doing to provide interesting activities.   There are several activities in Lake Chelan in mid July including First Friday – July 7th, Family Fest – July 8th, Bach Fest July 8th through 15th, the Riverwalk Concert with Alice Stuart – July 21st and Chelan Rodeo July 21st and 22nd.

The Chamber is posting information regarding the status of the Triathlons on the Chamber website www.lakechelan.com.  If people are interested in helping plan and organize the Triathlon events or have questions they can contact Dan or Jaye at the Chamber office, 509-682-3503.

Lake Chelan Chamber of Commerce Golf Tournament

The Chamber Golf Tournament was held last Friday afternoon.  We had almost 60 people participate, it was a great afternoon.  We had lots of great sponsors including Slaugenhaupt Insurance who sponsored a $10,000 Hole in One prize, unfortunately no one took home this great prize.  Cashmere Valley Bank provided ‘gold coins’ to the closest to the pin in each group on hole number two.   Also, Jim and Mary Ann Talley at Windermere Real Estate provided prizes for the long drives and KPs.  We had a drawing for a trip for two on the Lady of the Lake 2 with a night at the Silver Bay inn and a Cutter and Buck package from Company 107.   There were 18 hole sponsors that we will thank personally.  The Results;

  • Low Gross – The School District Team – Jeff Peck, Larry Bower, Mike Haerling, and Roger Stockdale shot a 54.
  • Low Net – Slaugenhaupt Team – Sue Slaugenhaupt, John Austin, Lloyd Krohn and Amy Martin
  • 2nd Low Net – The Winers – Rich Nestor, Ted Rasor, Doug Schwartz and Dan Hodge·
  • Men’s Long Drive – Roger Stockdale
  • Women’s Long Drive – Sue Slaugenhaupt
  • Men’s KPs – #7 Jeff Peck and #18 Jerry Trettevik
  • The Trip to Stehekin – Keith Allen
  • The Company 107 ‘Cutter and Buck package’ – John Aust
  • The best prize for the Most Gross went to the Best Western Team of Tom Gormley, Scott Looper, Justin Skaar, and Kim Skaar.  They received a Group lesson from Jim Oscarson at the Lake Chelan Golf Course.  By the way, if you see Kim Skaar ask him about his tee shot on number 18.

I want to thank Jim Oscarson and the staff at the Lake Chelan Golf Course for all their assistance with the our tournament and the Sun-up Oasis for the great food and the beverage cart.  The Sun-Up Oasis is a great place for lunch, and they do a great job with events like our tournament.

Lake Chelan Triathlon Status

The Lake Chelan Chamber issued a press release last Thursday regarding the status of the seven triathlons scheduled in the Lake Chelan area for July 8th – 19th.  These races can bring 2000 to 5000 people to the Valley.  The Chamber Board asked me to work with World Endurance Sports to reach an agreement to overcome the concerns and objections of the City, EMS, School District and others.  As of last Wednesday it became apparent we could not reach a satisfactory agreement.  The Chamber Board is very concerned about the impact that not having these races will have on local businesses and the participants’ perception of Lake Chelan.  We are working to notify participants of the status of the triathlons, and to see if it possible to organize safe, fun races for July 8th through July 19thDoing these events will take a massive community effort.  It will be expensive, and require 40-60 volunteers for each event.  But we are committed to providing a good experience for those participants who decide to come to Chelan.   The Chamber is planning an organizing committee meeting for Monday, June 26, 2006 at the Chamber office at 5:00 PM.  After that meeting we will make a decision about what can be done.  If people are interested in helping plan and organize the Triathlon events or have questions they can contact Dan or Jaye at the Chamber office, 509-682-3503.  The Chamber is posting information regarding the status of the Triathlons on the Chamber website www.lakechelan.com.
