Cashmere - Chelan County Sheriff Mike Harum reported on June 28, 2007, at 7:08 PM Deputies were dispatched to an aircraft crash near the Cashmere Airport in the Cashmere High School Parking lot. A single engine Cessna 182 aircraft with one person on board crashed short of the Cashmere Airport, at the north end of the Cashmere High School parking lot.
According to several witnesses, it appeared the pilot was
trying to land at the airport when the plane struck a tree just prior
to crashing, and then bursting into flames. The pilot was not able to
escape and died at the scene. It has been determined the aircraft and
pilot are not local residents. Chelan County Coroner Wayne Harris will
be conducting an investigation to determine the identity of the Pilot.
The NTSB will be arriving at 10:30 today to investigate the crash and
the possible cause. Deputies from the Sheriff's Office will be
maintaining security around the crash scene until that investigation is
complete. At this time, the crash is not affecting any further air
traffic at the Cashmere Airport.
